About our Founder

Dr. Dorothy Cooke-Johnson

Born in England on May 29, 1941, Dorothy brought her passion for biology and education to Barbados, where she began teaching at Queen's College in 1964. Throughout her illustrious career, she held various esteemed positions, including serving as a Council Member of the Barbados Family Planning Association, Director of the Barbados RSPCA, lecturer at the Barbados Community College, and principal of St. Winifred’s School. Her dedication to education extended to prestigious institutions like Harrison College, Queen’s College, and The Lodge School.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Dorothy played pivotal roles in numerous organizations, such as serving as Executive Secretary of the National Organisation of Women and being a member of the Royal Commonwealth Society. However, her most enduring legacy lies in her founding and leadership of The Barbados Cancer Society.

Dr. Cooke-Johnson's leadership was instrumental in mobilizing both public and private sectors to support The BCS mission. Serving as honorary secretary from its inception and later as president from 2012 to 2021, she provided unwavering guidance and direction. Throughout the society's 42-year journey, Dorothy remained the nucleus, fostering strong and dedicated teams to further the BCS's impactful work.

Her legacy transcends her professional achievements, as Dorothy was revered for her discipline, leadership, and unwavering passion. She was a role model for her son, a cherished member of her family, and a beacon of hope for countless individuals affected by cancer. Her qualities of persistence, patience, ambition, and confidence inspired all who knew her.

Dr. Dorothy Cooke-Johnson passed away in August 2022 at the age of 81, leaving behind a profound legacy of compassion and dedication. With her passing, Barbados mourns the loss of a national treasure. However, her indelible mark on the fight against cancer will endure, and The Barbados Cancer Society remains committed to honoring her vision and building upon the foundation she laid. Together, we will continue her noble work, ensuring that her impact on our community lives on.
